Aerin’s

I had dinner with Sarah at Aerin’s at Raffles City the other day. The ambience was good; we were seated next to a fountain and each table had a tea-light candle. Unfortunately our candle fizzled out after a while – I didn’t even play with it. The food was good, I liked it. We started off with a roasted pear salad with sundried tomatoes and brie cheese. I like brie cheese; it’s one of my favourite cheeses. I’m not a fan of funky cheeses with funky organisms on it, so I like brie. I first apologize for the pictures – bad lighting with cellphone camera equate bad pictures.

Roasted pear salad, $12

The roasted pear was nice; I’m not usually a fan of pears, the green ones but these were nice. There are toasted walnuts in the salad, so that adds to the smokey charred taste, balanced out by the sour vinegarette dressing and sweetness of the pear.

For main course, I had a stewed chicken dish with vegetables and potato dumplings in tomato-based stew.

Stewed chicken with potato dumplings, $20

I found the tomato stew a little too salty for my liking; a fault I find in many dishes in many restuarants, so maybe it’s just me. The chicken is slow-cooked tender, as well as the vegetables. The dish is served with two pieces of garlic bread, lending a crunchy texture compared to the rest. The potato dumplings were well-made; they are slightly chewy and compliments the tomato stew perfectly.

Sarah had sphaghetti with prawns, which she complained was tasteless. I tried a bit, I liked the taste of the sphagetti.

The sphagetti is tossed on olive oil with a certain garlicky taste that makes it interesting. Certainly more interesting than the regular tomato or cream sauce sphagetti. I would actually recommend this for people who don’t like heavy pasta dishes.

We ended the meal with a dessert. We had the Baked Apple and Rhubarb Pie, which their signature dessert. It is pricey at $12, but it can definitely feed two people.

Baked Apple and Rhubard Pie, $12

Flakey crust topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the pie is served as a pot pie. The inside is filled with warm baked apples and … rhubarb I suppose. I have never eaten nor seen rhubarb; I just know it’s a very English ingredient for dessert and pastry. The warm pie is meant to be eaten with the cold ice-cream and indeed, that is a very nice combination.

I enjoyed my dinner there and I think I will certainly visit them again.
